Electronic devices containing tobacco leaves are known as heat not burn products. When heated, they emit a nicotine-containing vapor, which you inhale. They differ from traditional cigarettes in that their mechanism heats the tobacco to much lower temperatures. In heat not burn devices, the tobacco is heated to 350°C, as opposed to traditional cigarettes, which combust and burn at temperatures of up to 900°C. Regardless, the temperature in heat not burn products is high enough for harmful chemicals to vaporize and be inhaled. Heat-not-burn tobacco products, also known as heated tobacco products, heat tobacco only. The heating process produces a tasty nicotine-containing vapor. Furthermore, because tobacco does not burn, the levels of harmful chemicals are significantly lower than in cigarette smoke.
What is the difference between heating tobacco and burning tobacco?
Cigarettes burn tobacco at high temperatures, resulting in ash, tar, and smoke laced with harmful chemicals. However, PMI’s HTPs heat tobacco to significantly lower temperatures without burning it, resulting in no fire, ash, or smoke. Because the tobacco is heated rather than burned, the average level of harmful chemicals is significantly lower than that of cigarette smoke.
IDEA BEHIND HEAT-NOT-BURN:
Heat-not-burn tobacco products are electronic devices that, instead of burning tobacco like traditional cigarettes, heat tobacco and produce an inhalable aerosol. Heat-not-burn products differ from e-cigarettes in that they use real tobacco rather than the flavored liquid nicotine found in e-cigarettes. The idea behind heat-not-burn is to provide users with an experience that looks and feels like smoking a traditional cigarette without inhaling combusted tobacco. Tobacco companies claim that heat-not-burn products are less harmful than cigarettes because tobacco burns or combusts, producing over 7,000 chemicals found in cigarette smoke. Many of these chemicals are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers.
RESEARCH ANALYSIS:
There is currently little research on the health effects of using or being exposed to heat-not-burn products, and no independently-verified evidence that they are safer. The majority of published research in the United States is led by Philip Morris scientists, who claim that smoking IQOS has less toxicity, lower levels of harmful and potentially harmful chemicals, and has little impact on lung or heart health (in animal studies) when compared to regular cigarettes. Tobacco companies have a history of exaggerating the dangers of their products, which is why public health experts, including Truth Initiative®, insist on independent researchers or the FDA verifying the industry’s findings.
WHAT EXACTLY ARE HEATED TOBACCO UNITS?
Heated tobacco units include a specially processed tobacco plug designed for heating rather than smoking. Tobacco plugs are made from tobacco leaves that have been ground and reconstituted into tobacco sheets known as cast-leaf. These sheets are crimped and formed into tobacco plugs.
With the evidence we currently have, normal cigarettes, heat not burn products, and e-cigarettes would be ranked highest to lowest in terms of cancer risk. Notably, the modeling study compared someone who uses heat not burn products to someone who is a current smoker. If we compared the effects of using heat not burn products to smoking, we would almost certainly see a lower health risk when using these products. There may be some merit for someone who uses heat not burn products as an alternative to smoking cigarettes.
