In a traditional cigarette, the tobacco is burned and this combustion produces smoke. In addition
to tar and carbon monoxide, this smoke contains more than 7000 substances, 69 of which are
carcinogenic. The e-cigarette heats a liquid. It is therefore not burned and does not emit smoke.
What does e-cigarette vapor contain?
Unlike cigarettes, it contains no tobacco, does not burn, and does not create smoke. It allows
you to inhale vapor obtained by heating a liquid composed mainly of propylene glycol, glycerol,
flavorings and, most often, nicotine.
A good number of electronic cigarette liquids contain and leading to the production of potentially
toxic substances which are metals and potentially carcinogenic compounds (acrolein), or even
known carcinogens for humans (formaldehyde).
However, the number and quantity of these substances strongly depends on the type of
electronic cigarette used and the way it is used, as well as the characteristics of the e-liquids.
The amount of nicotine inhaled with the electronic cigarette is comparable to that of the
conventional cigarette.
Are electronic cigarettes dangerous for health?
It has been shown that electronic cigarettes can modify the functioning of cells in the short term,
but the long-term consequences of these alterations remain to be determined.
Furthermore, no study has yet formally demonstrated the existence of a link between these
cellular modifications and the development of cancer, whether in humans or in animals. The use
of electronic cigarettes with nicotine leads to symptoms of addiction.
The heart rate increases following the inhalation of nicotine by electronic cigarette. A few cases
of electronic cigarette explosions have been reported, causing burns and injuries. These
explosions are related to problems with poor quality or user-modified batteries.
The use of electronic cigarettes in closed places increases the concentrations of particles and
nicotine in the ambient air.
In the state of scientific knowledge, there is no proof that the use of electronic cigarettes is a risk
factor for infertility or that it disrupts fetal development.
Is vaping less harmful than smoking?
The complete substitution of the cigarette by the e-cigarette reduces the user’s exposure to a
large number of toxic and carcinogenic substances. And for good reason: tobacco smoke
contains more than 4000 substances, 80 of which are carcinogenic.
On the other hand, no study has shown that the concomitant use of electronic cigarettes and
conventional cigarettes improves short-term health or reduces long-term risks.
The substances contained in electronic cigarette vapor can promote oxidative stress, but to a
lesser extent than the compounds present in cigarette smoke.
Coughing, wheezing and asthma could be exacerbated by the use of electronic cigarettes. On
the other hand, tobacco-related respiratory pathologies could be improved by the exclusive use
of electronic cigarettes.
Passive vaping seems to expose fewer particles than smoking. Studies do not show a link
between the use of electronic cigarettes and the development of cardiovascular diseases.
Electronic cigarette allows smokers to quit smoking
Significant scientific work has shown that there is no difference in abstinence at six months from
tobacco consumption between electronic cigarettes with nicotine and patches.
Studies have actually shown that the electronic cigarette promotes smoking cessation. In the
same way as nicotine patches or other devices. Some clinical trials have shown that e-liquids
with nicotine are more effective than those without nicotine in quitting smoking
